Such extensive functional and cosmetic changes had been incorporated into the refurbished International by the time it made it to Manitou, that it's link to it's original lineage was blurry at best. Carey Williams of Chicago Illinois owns a rare original International locomotive. Amazingly, this century old museum quality piece is fully operational! Carey brought this engine with him on a recent visit to the C & H track allowing us to make a first hand side-by-side comparison of the two.
One thing that didn't change in the locomotive's evolution was the smokebox door lettering featuring the name of Lester A. Ottaway, father of Herbert J. Ottaway. Well...almost. The prototype most likely carried the name of Herbert J. Ottaway (the younger). Jerry Ottaway posed for our cameras with such a casting carrying the name of his father H.J. Ottaway. The pattern for this casting is nowhere to be found, most likely the victim of a fire at the foundry where the original patterns were kept. Althought much family folklore surrounds the apparent name swap, in the final analysis, the entire Ottaway production run carried the name of L.A. Ottaway. We recently snapped a photo of what is believed to be the pattern for the final production casting.
